I haven't played X-Men: Destiny yet. The E3 demo is played by a developer, so I can't really comment on anything substantial like the battle system, or controls, or any of that crap that is important. Know that X-Men: Destiny is an action RPG where you mash light and heavy attack buttons and use your super powers to beat up lots of bad guys. And there's a boss battle. While I was watching the demo a few questions popped into my head, and I'm just going to word vomit them here. Consider this a jumping off point for when I talk to Silicon Knights about their game, which I intend to do at the earliest possibility because I want to like X-Men: Destiny so bad, and I don't yet.
This is supposed to be San Francisco?
Silicon Knights said that the game is set in a San Francisco that has been ravaged by earthquakes, but even with the debris and crumbling buildings, this isn't San Francisco. It seriously doesn't look anything like the city at all. Incorrect architecture, weird layout. It could maybe pass as a New York or Chicago. Granted I only saw a train station and "Chinatown" so hopefully there are at least some landmarks. Why does Nightcrawler have a dumb costume?
The costumes vary in X-Men Destiny, but for the most part they're pretty iconic. Cyclops and Colossus have their Astonishing X-Men costumes. Gambit, Wolverine, Juggernaut and Magneto all look like they're straight out of the 90s comic (or animated series). Awesome. Totally on board for this. But then Nightcrawler shows up and he looks like a Bohemian pothead. Did you dye your tail to be Rastafarian colors? The Nightcrawler I love (my favorite X-Men) is not a douche like that. Northstar is in this game? Rad (maybe).
I love Nightcrawler, but Northstar holds a special place in my heart (the gay place). I thought he was dumb for years but Chuck Austen did some cool things with him in the mid 2000s and he's earned my respect. I'm not sure whether he's just there as a counterpoint to Quicksilver – a speedster for each team – or if he's going to be fully fleshed out, but I'm hoping for the latter and it's details like this that keep me excited for the game. I can't create my own character?!
So I knew you couldn't create a character before E3, but many readers were hoping for this feature, so let's address it. Yes, you have to choose one of the three preset character: two generic looking dudes and that cute Asian chick that everyone will pick. However, it sounds like you can customize their powers initially, and as the game progresses you can expand on their powers and really open it up. You can even change costumes. So while it isn't the fully customizable experience I was hoping for, there is a substantial amount of options available to you. X-Men: Destiny shows promise, but I need to see more, and actually play it before I can really get a feel for how the game is. I want to run around and beat people up with awesome super powers, and I'm pretty easy to please, so fingers crossed on this one.
